Restore the Asquamchumaukee

The ancestral name for what is now called the Baker River is Asquamchumaukee; an Abenaki term roughly translated into "place of mountain waters". Though it may have had a different name in its earliest days when Algonquin language people had not yet coalesced into several different nations. Asquamchumaukee was the name given to it by the Western Abenaki people. We are determined to make an effort to reclaim the Abenaki name. We're in the early stages of establishing the effort but watch this space for updates soon!
